Vitamin C is probably one of the best known vitamins and is often associated with citrus fruits, which are often mentioned as a source of the vitamin. Vitamin C is also called ascorbic acid and is involved in various processes in the human body. It is considered an antioxidant and is therefore increasingly used as a preventive measure. Most recently, in the Corona pandemic, it was discussed whether vitamin C could be helpful against possible viral infestations, as it is said to strengthen the immune system.
The focus is on the antioxidant effects of vitamin C , which means it scavenges free radicals. Vitamin C is also said to be involved in strengthening the immune system. Furthermore, vitamin C is also said to strengthen the connective tissue and probably also serves as a vascular protector. A deficiency, on the other hand, leads to negative consequences, which are best illustrated by the disease scurvy.
The German Nutrition Society (DGE) recommends a daily intake of 95-110 mg of vitamin C for adults. This can be covered by a diet rich in fruit and vegetables. If you take food supplements, there are numerous preparations to choose from. An overdose is probably eliminated in a healthy person. However, some orthomolecular physicians doubt whether this amount is sufficient.
Everyone has to decide for themselves how and in what quantity they take vitamin C. Consultation with a doctor is advisable in any case. If necessary, a blood analysis can also help.
It is also up to each individual to decide in which form vitamin C should be taken.
The following foods contain vitamin C: for example, herbs such as parsley or wild garlic; vegetables such as peppers, peas and cabbage; in fruits such as lemons, oranges, currants, strawberries and papaya. When it comes to food supplements, preparations from natural sources of vitamin C, such as acerola cherry, are often preferred.
Be careful and decide for yourself whether your diet is sufficient to meet your daily vitamin C needs or whether you may have an increased need due to stressful situations, illnesses or even smoking or other drug use. In many cases, it is advisable to talk to your doctor.
